You are a Sunday porch I could do nothing on
and feel like everything was happening.

Those of us who think we know
the same secrets
are silent together most of the time,
for us there is eloquence
in desire, and for a while
when in love and exhausted
it’s enough to nod like shy horses
and come together
in a quiet ceremony of tongues.
It’s in disappointment we look for words
to convince us
the spaces between stars are nothing
to worry about;
it’s when those secrets burst
in that emptiness between our hearts
and the lumps in our throats.
And the words we find
are always insufficient, like love,
though they are often lovely
and all we have.

Listen to the stillness. The crisp, cold air demands you turn your breath back to your chest. Everything is going to be alright. Whisper it with me. Everything is going to be alright. There isn’t a perfect decision to be made, but you do have to decide. Acknowledge what you authentically desire right now, not what you think you should want, what we want you to want, or what makes you nostalgic for what you used to have. Once you are able to listen to your breath, search the strength in your self-efficacy, and step into the life you’ve made for this moment alone, your fists will unfold, your heart will open, your face will soften, and things will begin to be more than alright. Remember, at its worst, it will still be ok and once you take back the decisions that drive your days, things can be inconceivably marvelous. Don’t let the world make you hard. Don’t allow it to rob you of your resolve. You are sweet and strong and steadfast. I know you’ve been hurt, my darling. I know you’ve seen the darkness, heard the noise that won’t stop, and carry scars from what was torn from the grip of your gut. Don’t let that pain make you bitter about today. The past needs forgiveness and you can not worry about the future. Be brave. Keep moving, but be present above the fray, above the debates in your head, above the endless opinions around you. This moment is the only true reciprocal gift you have with yourself. Listen to the stillness.
